Energy efficiency is an increasingly important topic, and it’s clear from the tremendous response we received to the Ways 2 Save Electricity Video Contest that students and teachers across Pennsylvania think so too. Through the Ways 2 Save Electricity Video Contest, we sought to bring electricity saving ideas to Pennsylvania residents and businesses from a unique vantage point: that of today’s middle, junior and senior high school students. In total, there were nearly 200 videos submitted, making it a very difficult decision to pick the winners.
From October to Dec. 14, teachers and students in Met-Ed’s, Penelec’s and West Penn Power’s service areas were invited to create original videos showcasing unique ways to save electricity and correct electricity wasting habits at home, school or business for a chance to win one of 10 cash grants for their school.
Videos were evaluated based on creativity, effectiveness and quality by a panel of judges that included representatives from Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, Penn State’s nature center that serves as a field laboratory for Penn State students to get hands-on experience in the natural world.
Below you will find the list of first-place ($20,000), second-place ($10,000) and third-place ($5,000) grant winners from each of the Met-Ed, Penelec and West Penn Power service areas, along with links to the winning videos. Additionally, Berks Career and Technology College received the People’s Choice Award ($5,000) for creating the most viewed, “liked” and shared video.
Congratulations to our winning schools, and thank you to all of the students and teachers who participated in the Ways 2 Save Electricity Video Contest.
